Stavanger, Norway 4014
Part of Erasmus’ Lifelong Learning Programme, this unique Arena project gathers together 15 jazz students from Amsterdam, Salford and Stavanger in a two-week residency at Tou Scene. The orchestra represents the cream of the new European jazz generation and is gathered here in town for a unique collaboration, concluding with a concert as part of this year’s MaiJazz. During the fortnight, musicians will take part in daily rehearsals, workshops, theory classes, discussions and seminars. Heading up the learning curve will be instructors from the three countries involved: the UK, Netherlands and Norway. The orchestra will be led by bassist and composer Per Zanussi, which will also play a snippet of original works composed by him for large ensembles.
Zanussi is originally from Stavanger, making a name for himself on the Norwegian and international jazz stage over a number of years. In January he released a much praised live album with his Zanussi 13 project, a recording fully worthy of a plethora of prizes.
“Zanussi is a fleet and inventive bassist. He gets around on his instrument like a horn player, without sacrificing quality of sound, which can’t be said of every bassist I’ve heard recently.” (Chris Kelsey, Jazztimes)
